The herb is sourced from Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan in China. According to Chinese medicinal texts, the roots and leaves of Heishanzhe have muscle-relaxing and joint-relieving properties, promote blood circulation, and alleviate pain. As a result, it is commonly used in the treatment of traumatic injuries and fractures. In Laos, the leaves of this orchid were traditionally utilized in the production of mats. In Thailand, the entire plant is employed as a tonic to strengthen the body. A compound called p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, which is an aglycone of gastrodin, has been isolated from various terrestrial and mycoheterotrophic orchid species. In experiments conducted on rats, both gastrodin and p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol have shown the ability to facilitate memory consolidation and retrieval. Furthermore, p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol has been found to have skin whitening effects.
