Therapeutic Orchid notes:
Coelogyne trinervis Lindl.
Known as Ueang mak in Thai, this orchid is considered sacred in parts of Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan), where its flowering season is thought to predict rice harvest abundance. In Thailand, its tuber treats fractures and sprains, while in Myanmar, it's used for dysentery and diarrhea. In Nepal, pseudobulb infusions ease constipation. Chemical extracts from C. cristata include compounds with medicinal properties, supporting its diverse traditional uses. |
Cymbidium elegans Lindl. var. elegans Syn. Cymbidium longifolium D. Don.
Known as Suocao Lan in Chinese, this orchid bears many flowers on its stem. The lip lacks appendages. In India, salep from the plant is used as a demulcent or emetic. The fresh leaf juice is applied to stop bleeding, especially from deep wounds. |
Dendrobium discolor Lindl. Syn. Dendrobium undulatum R. Br., D. elobatum Rupp., D. fuscum Fitzg.
Known as the Golden Orchid in Australia and referred to as Rigo twist, Moresby gold, and Bensbach yellow in Papua New Guinea, this plant has medicinal uses. In Mackay, Queensland, Aboriginal people made a poultice from young canes of D. discolor to treat boils. They also used the juice of old canes to make a liniment for ringworm. |
Dendrobium loddigesii Rolfe
Known as Fenhuashihu (pink flower Dendrobium), Meihuashihu (beautiful flowered Dendrobium), Xiaohuangcao (small yellow herb), and huanchahu (ring-like hairpin) in Chinese, this orchid blooms fragrant flowers singly on leafless stems, especially in April. It grows on trees or rocks in Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Hong Kong. Chinese medicine uses its stem to benefit the stomach, stimulate saliva, nourish yin, and reduce fever. It treats conditions like thirst, anorexia, and weak bodies, and is used for Type 2 diabetes treatment. |
Dendrobium polyanthum Wall ex Lind. syn. Dendrobium primulinum Lindl.
Known as Xibianshihu (fine petal Dendrobium) and Baochunhuangshilan (harbinger of spring yellow Dendrobium) in Chinese, with Thai names like Ueang Sai Naam Pueng and Sai lueang, and a Myanmar name Thinn kyu kyu.
