Being a team player doesn’t only extend to our work or when we are playing in sports teams, but it extends to all parts of our lives because we can never avoid working and interacting with humans.
Basically, being a team player means to display excellent support to the members of team to achieve the team’s goals as one united body.

Participate & Contribute

There will be occasions where we face dilemmas on the amount of contribution we should provide especially in a team, and if your contribution actually matters or if it would actually make things worse.
However, in a team, with proper delegation and clear communications, every small effort could help. Because, a team function as a body, where their delegated task forms their specific function in the body. It may seem we are working separately but yet, as a team, we are in co-dependence. Hence helping out one another in each other’s times of needs.
This team play improves the overall team’s productivity or quality of their work, helping the team achieve their goals efficiently.

Recognize the Yours & Your Team’s Needs

Despite working together in a same team, every individual member may have their own goals or needs that they would want to fulfil while working in the team.
The point here is for you to observe and identify the members’ needs in the team, so that if you can assist others in meeting their goals, you can help. However, the important point here is that, you should only provide support when you have taken care of your own needs.
Because, “If you can’t take care of yourself, you cannot take care of someone else”. Hence, by taking care of yourself first and then providing support to your team can lead to a very favourable circumstance where all members are able to grow as they work together.

Cooperative

The definition of being cooperative is “mutual assistance in working towards a common goal”. However, being cooperative is often mistaken as being a yes-man, which could sometimes prove to do more harm than good to a team’s improvement.
Saying no, when necessary, and stating the reasons for your rejection while allowing further open-minded discussion, can also mean you are being cooperative. As the you are still united in the team in working towards the same goal as everyone, which is to bring success to the team.
What’s most important about cooperation is that everyone in the team is recognize the team’s targeted objectives and moves towards the same goal in unity. The result of which will be the formation of a strong and united team.

Sharing of Information

Sharing information of each other’s work is important to keep a mental note on everyone’s roles and responsibilities such that we know who to turn to when we need help in a certain area.
Sharing knowledge on your work could also help you to be more competent in your work, as you have to fully understand your work to teach others. Furthermore, help could also be received if you need since your team mates understands the inner workings of your work.
Overall, it helps the team to gain efficiency in their work and bring cohesiveness in the team’s bonding with the information network built and shared among the members of the team.
