History of Attar: The Timeless Essence of Halal Fragrance

Attar Distillation Equipment for Rose Oil
Perfume has been an integral part of human civilization for centuries. Among the earliest forms of fragrance is attar, an alcohol-free, oil-based perfume that has its roots in the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and the Middle East. The term "attar" (also spelled "itr" or "ittar") is derived from the Sanskrit word "sugandha," meaning "aromatic." Unlike modern perfumes that often contain alcohol, attar is crafted by distilling flowers, herbs, and spices into a base oil, typically sandalwood or olive oil. This method results in a fragrance that is not only long-lasting but also deeply connected to nature and tradition.

The Origins of Attar and Halal Scents

The art of creating attar dates back thousands of years. In ancient civilizations, artisans would crush and infuse plant materials such as flowers and wood bark in water or oil to extract their aromatic properties. This process laid the foundation for the creation of attar, which has remained largely unchanged over time. The use of alcohol-free ingredients makes attar particularly significant in Islamic culture, where the consumption of alcohol is prohibited. As a result, attar has become a preferred choice for many Muslims seeking a halal alternative to traditional perfumes.

The Art of Creating Natural Attar

The traditional method of producing attar, known as degh-bhapka, is still practiced in places like Kannauj, India. This artisanal process involves heating copper pots with wood and cow dung to create steam. Flowers such as rose, jasmine, and tuberose are placed in the "degh" (the copper pot) along with water. The pot is then sealed airtight with cotton and clay. As the water boils, the steam rises and is directed through a bamboo rod into another copper vessel called the "bhapka," which contains sandalwood oil. The steam condenses in the bhapka, infusing the sandalwood oil with the essence of the flowers. This method can take several days to complete, resulting in a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume that captures the purest form of the plant's aroma.

Cultural Significance of Attar

Attar holds a special place in various cultures, particularly in the Middle East and South Asia. In Islamic tradition, attar is not only used for personal fragrance but also holds spiritual significance. The Prophet Muhammad is said to have cherished fragrances, making attar an integral part of Islamic traditions. It is commonly applied before prayer and used during sacred ceremonies. In Arab cultures, offering guests a touch of attar is a sign of respect and hospitality, believed to leave a lasting impression of beauty and grace.

Attar in Modern Times

Origin of fragrances, likely happed in the Egyptian civilization. They were the original manufacture of perfumes from plants. However, India also has very close links with this olfactory universe since ancient times. Archaeological excavations carried out in the Indus Valley have revealed very rudimentary vats that date back to a very distant era. The oldest distillation vessels were found in Indus valley as well.

Around 16th century, during
Mughal empire India became the cradle of attar manufacturing. It is under the Mughal empire that the attar spreads. Akbar, an emperor and descended from Genghis Khan, established a culture based on refinement and pleasures. He even founded a ministry for developing perfumes and for the flavours.
